Commission an Original Painting
Commissioning art should feel exciting, not intimidating, so here's everything you need to know before we begin.
Before You Get in Touch
Contact me first. I take on a limited number of commissions each ear so that every painting gets my full attention. Start by sending me a note to see if I'm currently accepting commissions
Make sure my style is right for you. Have a good look through the paintings on this site. The best commissiions happen when you already love what I do.
Notice which paintings you love. As you browse, pay attention to the pieces you keep coming back to. What colours draw you in? How big is the wall or corner where the painting will live? These observations are good starting points.
Think about budget. Size: for example commissioned paintings start at 18" x 24" up to 48" x 72" other dimensions and shapes such as circles are possible, but I seldom go less than 18" for the smallest dimension. But it never hurts to ask. Cost: My commissioned paintings start at $3000.00. The price increases based on size and complexity.
How Commissioning Works
1. Send me an email with your idea - the subject, the mood, any favourite paintings of mine, size you have in mind. No idea is too rough at this stage.
2. We'll discuss colours, composition, size, timeline, and lighting in the room it will be hung in, framing and shipping. And any questions you have. Then I'll give you a quote.
3 Once you're happy with everything, a 50% non refundable deposit secures your place in my painting schedule. (more on this below)
4. I'll share progress along the way, small changes can be made, but major changes that involve more time and or materials might require additional costs. Additional costs will be covered in the quote.
5. When the painting is finished, I'll send you a photo for your approval. The remaining 50% is due before the painting is shipped or picked up.
About the Deposit once we agree on your painting, I will be setting aside studio time, ordering materials, and turning down other work to create your painting. The deposit honours that commitment. If for any reason I am not able to finish the painting, the full deposit will be refunded.
Questions You Might Have Q & A
How long will it take? Most commissions take one to six months from deposit to deliver, depending on drying time, size, additional research of the subject, additional photo shoots, etc.
Can I ask for changes? Always ask, and please point out any areas you are uncomfortable with. I'm fine making small changes, I want you to be completely happy with your painting. However, major changes to the composition that require significant extra time, or materials would require extra cost (major changes and costs, will be covered in the quote).
Can you paint from a photo? My preference, especially where pets are involved is to take a large number of photos myself along with videos. And often a second photo session after I've started the painting to make sure I'm portraying the pet's personality. I prefer to rely on my own equipment as I calibrate my camera for colour and I know how it affects perspectives. Also there is additional information my mind is taking in that the camera misses, this information can improve the painting.
Do you ship? I do ship across Canada and the cost of shipping in Canada is usually included in the quote. However, many European countries have a VAT fee, and the USA charges a 50% tariff on art from Canada, so these costs would need to be covered.
Commission inquiries are welcomed and answered personally. I look forward to painting with you.
